Between the normal hairs are many black tactile hairs.

However, manatees are unique since these tactile hairs are located over the whole post-cranial body in addition to the face.

These specialized tactile hairs form the whiskers of the upper lips, and are also found on the cheeks and the chin, over the eyes and on the wrists of the forelegs.
