Following snowmelt Dark stonecrop and Snow gentian are the first to appear, their seeds beginning to germinate as early as August.

Bedraggled as they were, the pretty blue wood asters, columbines and alpine gentian weren't ready to give up the ghost for winter.

Alpine plants such the Alpine gentian grow in abundance in areas such as the meadows above the Lauterbrunnental.
