Smithsonite occurs as a secondary mineral in the weathering or oxidation zone of zinc-bearing ore deposits.

It occurs with limonite, malachite, beudantite, adamite, cuproadamite, olivenite and smithsonite.

One day a miner at the Morning Star Mine extracted a single mass of pure smithsonite (zinc carbonate) weighing 12,750 pounds.

At the Puttapa Mine in Australia it occurs with adamite, mimetite, smithsonite, goethite and quartz.

There are some other zinc ores, such as smithsonite (zinc carbonate) and a zinc silicate mineral.

It occurs in association with chalcocite, bornite, willemite, smithsonite, hydrozincite, hemimorphite, adamite, olivenite and gebhardite.

A good example of isomorphism classification would be the calcite group, containing the minerals calcite, magnesite, siderite, rhodochrosite, and smithsonite.

Hemimorphite, is a sorosilicate mineral which has been mined from days of old from the upper parts of zinc and lead ores, chiefly associated with smithsonite.

It has been found in association with cerussite, descloizite, hemimorphite, hopeite, hydrozincite, "limonite", parahopeite, pyromorphite, scholzite, smithsonite, and vanadinite.

Brass is made by mixing solid copper metal in with zinc oxide or carbonate which comes in the form of calamine or smithsonite (Rehren 2003: p209).
