The larvae feed on Carduus and Cirsium species, but also Cotton thistle, Artemisia and Serratula tinctoria.

Other prominent plants are herbs, including many species with a local distribution among them; Saw-wort (Serratula tinctoria) and dyer's greenweed (Genista tinctoria).

The grassland also includes typical meadow species as saw-wort Serratula tinctoria, meadow thistle Cirsium dissectum, knapweed Centaurea nigra and lady's smock Cardamine pratensis.

The larvae feed on Arctium lappa, Carduus, Carlina, Centaurea jacea, Centaurea nigra, Centaurea scabiosa, Cirsium vulgare, Knautia, Serratula tinctoria and Sonchus.
