Heath Bedstraw (Galium saxatile)

On these soils, Wavy Hair-grass Deschampsia flexuosa and Heath Bedstraw Galium saxatile are quite common and widespread.

The rock garden contains Iberis, Eschscholzia, Veronica, golden alyssum (Alyssum saxatile), Aquilegia, Dianthus and pomegranates.

The class is quite common and is not diverse, with some shade-tolerant mosses and species such as bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and heath bedstraw (Galium saxatile) as remnants of the former vegetation.

The soils in the higher regions are, as in most of the Harz, comparatively poor in nutrients and bases, so that only a few herbaceous plants occur here, such as heath bedstraw (Galium saxatile).

The early flowering Basket-of-Gold (Alyssum saxatile) loves to tuck its roots between cool crevices and rest its foliage on the warm face of a rock, as does that delicate tussock Bellflower (Campanula carpatica).

The Fell is actively managed by Durham County Council, in an effort to maintain a broad range of heathland species, including such desirable species as Heath Bedstraw, Galium saxatile, and Common Tormentil, Potentilla erecta.

Older, established blocks of heather have greater biodiversity and include lichens as well as flowering plant species isuch as heath bedstraw Galium saxatile, lady's bedstraw Galium verum, common speedwell Veronica officinalis and sheep's fescue Festuca ovina.

Additionally, flora typical of relatively basepoor clay soils, such as pignut Conopodium majus, betony Betonica officinalis, heath bedstraw Galium saxatile, tormentil Potentilla erecta, devil's-bit scabious Succisa pratensis, and mat grass Nardus stricta, are present.
