It is the only member of the genus Hydrocoloeus, although it has been suggested that Ross's Gull also should be included in this genus.

In North America, a Ross's Gull has been spotted as far south as Salton Sea in California, although sightings this far south are extremely rare.

A Ross's Gull in Cleveland in June and an Ivory Gull at Inverness in July attract large numbers of birders.

The island also serves as a resting place for migrating birds recorded in the IUCN Red List, such as petrels, sea eagles, skuas, and Ross's Gulls.

The book adopts a conservative approach at higher taxonomic levels, lumping all gulls (except for Ivory Gull, Ross's Gull and the two kittiwakes) in the genus Larus.

Other bird species are skua, sterna, Northern Fulmar, Ivory Gull, Glaucous Gull, Ross's Gull, Long-tailed Duck, eider, loon and Willow Grouse.

The tails of all but three species are rounded; the exceptions being the Sabine's Gull and Swallow-tailed Gulls, which have forked tails, and the Ross's Gull, which has a wedge-shaped tail.

Dresser also had privileged access to the notes of many of the most prominent ornithologists, such as Russian ornithologist Sergei Buturlin, who discovered the main breeding grounds of Ross's Gull in 1905 in the Kolyma delta in remote north-east Siberia.

Structurally, it is most similar to the kittiwakes; however, recent genetic analysis based on mtDNA sequences shows that Sabine's Gull is the Ivory Gull's closest relative, followed by the kittiwakes, with Ross's Gull and Swallow-tailed Gull sharing a clade with these species.
