The world population of red-breasted geese has decreased this century.

Only thirty-odd wild red-breasted geese have ever been recorded in Britain.

But today, from Loke Hide, we were looking at a single wild red-breasted goose.

While wintering, the Red-breasted Goose feeds on grasses, leaves and seeds.

The red-breasted goose migrates entirely overland, and so can stop for fuel every night - unlike those that cross the open ocean.

However, the most time-consuming sequence involved red-breasted geese in flight - not in terms of actual filming, but in preparing for it.

Because the red-breasted goose is clearly a bird in urgent need of special conservation measures, Slim bridge Wildfowl Trust has long hoped to breed from its collection.

The Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis) is a brightly marked, endangered species of goose in the genus Branta from Eurasia.

Here it is possible to meet a large quantity of birds: geese, sandpipers, swans, herons, ducks, magpies, seagulls, cormorants, warblers, lapwings, red-breasted geese, mute swans.

The Red-breasted Goose breeds in Arctic Siberia, mainly on the Taymyr Peninsula, with smaller populations in the Gydan and Yamal peninsulas.

The Red-breasted Goose is one of the species to which the 'Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds' (AEWA) applies.

Animals in the exhibit include Caribbean flamingos, Chilean flamingos, Galapagos tortoises, mallard ducks, red-breasted geese, ruddy ducks, common shelducks, swan geese, and white-faced whistling ducks.

The Greater White-fronted Goose, Red-breasted Goose and Mallard spend the winter there, and there are large populations of the Pygmy Cormorant and Great White Pelican.

According to Birdlife International, a bird-protection group based in England, members of two other threatened species, the red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis) and the Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus), have been found dead of the disease.

The Red-breasted Goose often nests close to nests of birds of prey, such as Snowy Owls and Peregrine Falcons, which helps to protect this small goose from mammalian predators such as the Arctic Fox.

In this picture, alongside the pelican are species of wild fowl and domesticated duck, among them muscovy, shelduck, grebe, red-breasted goose, widgeon; and on the far side of the pool are large birds from different continents: a cassowary, East African Crowned Crane and flamingos.

There are colonies of herons and cormorants (including pygmy cormorant), and other species include white-tailed eagle, buzzards, Eurasian sparrowhawks, common spoonbills, western marsh harrier, Montagu's Harrier, red-breasted goose, ferruginous duck, osprey, Wild Goose, stork, heron, woodcock etc.

Belene Island is a part of the Belene Islands Complex and of the Persina Natural Park, a home to over 170 species of rare water birds, such as the Glossy Ibis, Pygmy Cormorant, Lesser Grey Shrike, Red-breasted Goose and others.
