When installing nails in hardwood floors, predrill a hole for each nail to prevent splitting the wood.

Then predrill holes and drive ring-shank panel nails at angles into the edge of the nosing to hold the split together.

If the wood still threatens to split, remove the nail and predrill all the nail holes, using a very thin drill bit.

Then you predrill nail holes, apply wood glue, hammer in nails, clamp in that"þhe pointed toward a heavy metal contraptionþ"miter vise.
