PFIB is a product of pyrolysis of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), one of the substances causing polymer fume fever.

The company acknowledges that fumes from Teflon pans subjected to high heat can release gasses unrelated to PFOA, which can kill pet birds and cause a flulike condition in humans known as polymer fume fever.

When pans are overheated beyond approximately 350 C (660 F) the PTFE coating begins to dissociate, releasing byproducts (PFOA) which can cause polymer fume fever in humans and can be lethal to birds.
