She began alone onstage in a hooded parka, reciting her poem "Piss Factory" with spiraling intensity; with her band, she sang Mr. Dylan's "Wicked Messenger," a song that in the end demands good news.

In 1974, she released one of the earliest punk-rock singles, financed by Mapplethorpe; one side was the garage-rock anthem "Hey Joe"; the other was her ferocious poem about working on an assembly line, called "Piss Factory."
