In contrast to pilar cysts, epidermoid cysts are usually present on parts of the body with relatively little hair.

Trichilemmal cyst - Same as a pilar cyst.

Pilar cysts (also termed trichelemmal cysts, isthmus-catagen cysts).

As the pilar cyst wall is the thickest and most durable of the many varieties of cysts, it can be grabbed with forceps and pulled out of the small incision.

Both of the above types of cyst contain keratin, not sebum, and neither originates from sebaceous glands (epidermoid cysts originate in the epidermis and pilar cysts originate from hair follicles).

Sebaceous cyst is a term used to refer to both an epidermoid cyst and a pilar cyst, though neither of these contain sebum, only keratin and do not originate in the sebaceous gland and so are not true sebaceous cysts.
