Once hypophosphatemia and phosphaturia have been identified, a search for the causative tumor should begin.

If there is inappropriately high urine phosphate (phosphaturia) in the setting of low serum phosphate (hypophosphatemia), there should be a high suspicion for tumor-induced osteomalacia.
