Hürthle (oxyphil) - have the potential for microinvasion.

As in many endocrine organs, with age, more oxyphil cells appear in the parathyroid gland.

In the parathyroid gland, the parathyroid oxyphil cell is larger and paler than the parathyroid chief cell.

A second image is obtained after a washout time (approximately 2 hours), and mitochondria in the oxyphil cells of the abnormal glands retaining the Tc are seen with the gamma camera.

Sestamibi imaging is correlated with the number and activity of the mitochondria within the parathyroid cells, such that oxyphil cell parathyroid adenomas have a very high avidity for sestamibi, while chief cell parathyroid adenomas have almost no imaging quality at all with sestambi.
