African Dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis)

Crocodiles range in size from African Dwarf crocodiles that measure rarely over 5 feet to saltwater crocodiles which can approach 23 feet.

It appears to have been a crocodylid, but could be closer to either the African dwarf crocodiles (Osteolaemus) or the true crocodiles (Crocodylus).

In 2004 two female West African Dwarf Crocodiles successfully hatched on October 1, the first birth of this species in Canada.

During that weekend the public got to learn about some of the zoos oldest residents, including; Marg the demoiselle crane and Monty the West African dwarf crocodile.

The crocodile pools (which formerly housed West African dwarf crocodiles, American alligators and Philippine crocodiles) currently house spectacled caimans.

Certain species can indeed gallop, including Cuban crocodiles, New Guinea crocodiles, African dwarf crocodiles, and even small Nile crocodiles.

Crocodilean species include the gharial, marsh crocodile, saltwater crocodile, Siamese crocodile, African dwarf crocodile, Nile crocodile and spectacled caiman.

Three species of crocodiles reported are: Slender-snouted Crocodile (Mecistpos cataphractus), West African Dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis) and West African Crocodylus suchus; the first two are on the endangered list.

These include Pygmy marmosets, leafcutter ants, praying mantises, Lake Malawi cichlids, salmon-pink bird-eating spiders, locusts, Burmese pythons, plumed basilisks, West African dwarf crocodiles, Yemen chameleons, green tree pythons, and poison dart frogs.

Recent studies suggests, the dwarf crocodile, Osteolaemus tetraspis is not a single, but two or even three species.

Likouala is home to, among other animals, the dwarf crocodile Osteolaemus tetraspis osborni.

Krabisuchus also had a raised skull similar to the extinct alligatorine Arambourgia and living crocodile Osteolaemus tetraspis.
