Closed boring methods shall be used in non-cohesive soil conditions.

Generally used for non-cohesive soils, samples taken this way are considered disturbed.

Non-cohesive soils (eg. sand) are more susceptible to being eroded through stream movement.

Limitations-- shallow, non-cohesive soils of low fertility with low water retention capacity.

Limitations-- non-cohesive soils of high permeability, high erodibility, low fertility and low available waterholding capacity.

Non-cohesive soils such as sands are removed more readily by raindrop impact than cohesive soils such as clays.

Non-Cohesive soils (eg. sand) are more readily picked up by wind movement than cohesive soils (eg. clay)

Failures in cohesive soils will be in rotational or planar failure surfaces, while in non-cohesive soils failures will be in an avalanche fashion.

However, one should not assume that total scour in cohesive or cemented soils will not be as large as in non-cohesive soils, the scour takes longer to develop.
