Jackson's mongoose is carnivorous, insectivorous and myrmecophagous.

This feature also supports the idea that they were myrmecophagous, as modern mammals employ this technique to break into termite mounds.

Many myrmecophagous mammals, such as the aardwolf, anteaters and pangolin, have either no teeth, or, in cases like the aardwolf, have large diastemas between their sparse teeth.

Other caterpillars have evolved from ant-loving to ant-eating: these myrmecophagous caterpillars secrete a pheromone that makes the ants act as if the caterpillar is one of their own larvae.

It was probably myrmecophagous, eating insects such as ants and termites, but may also have eaten other soft food, and because of its small size probably did not forage in termite mounds, as the aardvark does.

Such myrmecophagous species, however, will not necessarily refuse other prey items, and will routinely catch flies and similar prey in the usual salticid fashion, without the special precautions they apply in hunting dangerous prey such as ants.
