In some guns, this element is replaced with a wide ring and is called a muzzle band.

The long bearing surface on the Gewehr 98 eliminated the addition of a muzzle ring.

The most notable differences between the two are the diameter of the muzzle rings, and the locking mechanism.

This was a standard, M1917 bayonet fitted at the Winchester factory with a special muzzle ring.

The advantage of this solution lies in the fact that muzzle rings can interfere with barrel oscillation which can significantly impede the accuracy of a rifle.

The bayonet is installed by slipping the muzzle ring around the flash hider and latching the handle down on the bayonet lug under the front sight base.

Number twenty, for example, which in its entirety said of the gunner: 'He is to observe upon the guns, the notches or sights on the base, or muzzle rings, for the better guiding the aim.'

The knife bayonets are basically fighting knives or utility knives with a lug and/or muzzle ring to attach to the barrel of a firearm such as an assault rifle or submachine gun.
