What is a meconium plug?

Functional immaturity of the colon (meconium plug or small left colon syndrome)

Other conditions with similar symptoms include a tumor or cyst on or in the intestines or a blockage that occurs when meconium becomes stuck in the baby's bowel (meconium plug syndrome).

Meconium ileus should be distinguished from meconium plug syndrome, in which a tenacious mass of mucus prevents the meconium from passing and there is no risk of intestinal perforation.
