malpighian corpuscle

There are at least two anatomical structures called a Malpighian corpuscle.

This name is not used widely anymore, probably to avoid confusion with a Malpighian corpuscle in the spleen.

Composed of a glomerulus (kidney) and Bowman's capsule, the renal corpuscle (or 'Malpighian corpuscle') is the beginning of the nephron.

A renal corpuscle is also known as a Malpighian corpuscle, named after Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694), an Italian physician and biologist.

Many microscopic anatomical structures are named after him, including a skin layer (Malpighi layer) and two different Malpighian corpuscles in the kidneys and the spleen, as well as the Malpighian tubules in the excretory system of insects.

The cells of the reticulum each possess a round or oval nucleus, and like the splenic cells, they may contain pigment granules in their cytoplasm; they do not stain deeply with carmine, and in this respect differ from the cells of the Malpighian corpuscles.
