In addition, body lice can be a vector for louse-borne typhus, louse-borne relapsing fever or trench fever.

A 2011 study found B. recurrentis DNA in 23% of head lice from patients with louse-borne relapsing fever in Ethiopia.

Indeed, body lice are important vectors of epidemic or louse-borne typhus, trench fever, louse-borne relapsing fever, and probably even classical bubonic plague.

Except for Borrelia recurrentis (which causes louse-borne relapsing fever and is transmitted by the human body louse), all known species are believed to be transmitted by ticks.

It resembles bacterial sepsis and can occur after initiation of antibacterials, such as penicillin or tetracycline, for the treatment of louse-borne relapsing fever (80-90% of patients) and in tick-borne relapsing fever (30-40%).
