Lamium maculatum was depicted in a painting by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century [1].

Notable, too, is dead nettle (Lamium maculatum), a member of the mint family whose silver-splashed leaves have inspired cultivar names like Beacon Silver and White Nancy.

But there are several cultivars of the European species Lamium maculatum that are well worth growing, especially in slightly shaded spots, where their silvery foliage, which persists through the winter, adds a sparkling touch of light.
