Originally a subspecies of Bell's hinge-back tortoise (Kinixys belliana), this southern African tortoise was elevated to full species status by herpetologist, Broadley in 1993.

As of March 22, 2000, the USDA has banned importation of the Leopard Tortoise, Bell's hinge-back tortoise and the African spurred tortoise.
