The second field of study was much more lucrative and was known as judicial oratory.

Judicial oratory had become a significant literary genre by the second half of the fifth century, as represented in the speeches of Demosthenes' predecessors, Antiphon and Andocides.

Of these causes, Cicero goes deepest into judicial oratory, therefore emphasizing "the desirableness of maintaining the laws, and the danger with which all public and private affairs are threatened."
