internuclear ophthalmoplegia

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia is a disorder of conjugate lateral gaze.

White matter tracts connecting these nuclei, as in internuclear ophthalmoplegia, an occasional finding in multiple sclerosis.

Lesions of the MLF produce internuclear ophthalmoplegia and can be a presenting symptom of multiple sclerosis, where it presents as nystagmus and diplopia.

This produces ipsilateral horizontal gaze palsy and facial nerve palsy and contralateral hemiparesis, hemisensory loss, and internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Lesions of the abducens nucleus and the MLF produce observable sixth nerve problems, most notably internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO).

The one and a half syndrome is a rare ophthalmoparetic syndrome characterized by "a conjugate horizontal gaze palsy in one direction and an internuclear ophthalmoplegia in the other".

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia occurs when MS affects a part of the brain stem called the medial longitudinal fasciculus, which is responsible for communication between the two eyes by connecting the abducens nucleus of one side to the oculomotor nucleus of the opposite side.
