Outside the spawning season, Alpine newts live terrestrially.

Alpine newts typically inhabit forests with good access to water in hilly to mountainous regions.

Early in the year, Alpine Newts mate.

After the adults come out of winter dormancy, the Alpine Newts immediately take themselves to the spawning pools.

Alpine newts were originally confined to Central Europe and mountainous Southern Europe, as well as an isolated area on the northern Iberian Peninsula.

Fauna includes populations of Pyrenean desmans, bearded vultures, Alpine choughs, wood pigeons, Alpine newts, European snow voles and black woodpeckers.

The amphibian Alpine Newts (Triturus Alpestris), living in the alpine lakes of the Tymfi region, mostly in Drakolimni, are associated with local folktales of dragons and dragon battles.

The Alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris), endemic to the Alps, lives in it.
