Aberdare Extended "No. 2 West" section had been the site of an earlier hydraulic stowage experiment.

A special reason for the hydraulic stowage in "2 West" at Aberdare Extended Colliery had been to secure a seal in the Aberdare Extended mine from the open-cut operation.

On the 19th June 1944 a conference was held between representatives of Caledonian Collieries Company Limited, NSW Mines Department and the Miners Federation on the question of carrying out hydraulic stowage.
