A holocrystalline plutonic igneous rock composed primarily of hornblende amphibole is called a hornblendite, which are usually crystal cumulates.

The Lherz massif also contains harzburgite and dunite, as well as layers of spinel pyroxenite, garnet pyroxenite, and hornblendite.

Hornblende rich ultramafic rocks are rare and when hornblende is the dominant mineral phase they are classified as hornblendites with qualifiers such as garnet hornblendite identifying a second abundant contained mineral.
