It is the opposite of a homeotherm, an organism which maintains thermal homeostasis.

Man is a "homeotherm"--that is, our bodies try to maintain a constant body temperature irrespective of the temperature of their surroundings.

This is why to account for their longevity it is now believed that they were a qualified kind of ectothermic homeotherm continually striving to become endothermic homeotherms.

The theory proposed that isochore's composition varied markedly between "warm-blooded" (homeotherm) vertebrates and "cold-blooded" (poikilotherm) vertebrates and later became known as the isochore theory.

However, when homeotherms and poikilotherms have similar niches, and compete, the homeotherm can often drive poikilothermic competitors to extinction, because homeotherms can gather food for a greater fraction of each day.
