Naked buds are found in some shrubs, like some species of the Sumac and Viburnums (Viburnum alnifolium and V. lantana) and in herbaceous plants.

North Americans Indians caught trout with nets, traps and spears, but also used natural poisons, including the mashed roots of both the walnut tree and one of the viburnums, probably Viburnum alnifolium.

There are opening days when it seems as if nothing less than a good slug of pulverized root of Viburnum alnifolium will bring a trout to hand, but when the water is high and cold the modern fly-fisher, if persistent, will catch fish with a weighted nymph bounced along the bottom.
