In Japan, other than being called asunaro, it also goes by the name hiba (ひば).

It also features a theme song: "Heart" by the Japanese group Asunaro.

Shortly after Shiga entered the 1996 Asunaro Cup Tournament where he finished in 6th place with 2 points.

There are also a few regional variations, with asunaro being called ate (貴, 阿天) in Ishikawa, and atebi on Sado island.

In January 1994, Slinger finished third place behind Takao Ōmori and Jun Akiyama for the Asunaro Cup tournament.

The genus is monophyletic and sister to Thujopsis.
