Microsoft's method of discerning one computer from another relies on the Hardware ID generated by the OS.

As for most enthusiasts, the Hardware ID (HWID) makes us nervous.

The software then forms a Product ID based on the software, and Hardware ID generated from computer information as well.

Once connected to the system, the system will check your Product ID (and Hardware ID if this is a return visit) against a database.

Details tab in Device Manager which displays various device identification strings such as device instance ID, hardware ID, service name, filters, firmware revision, power state mappings and capabilities etc.

Some software licensing is tied down to a unique hardware ID, be it a MAC address, or some other kind of burned-in information, which is typically not portable into the VM.

The Windows Vista Bluetooth stack is improved with support for more hardware IDs, EDR performance improvements, Adaptive frequency hopping for Wi-Fi co-existence, and Synchronous Connection Oriented (SCO) protocol support which is needed for audio profiles.
