A variety of halogenated substances are discharged to aquatic systems as a result of chlorination of wastewaters and cooling waters.

Several classes of halogenated substances that contain fluorine, chlorine, or bromine are also greenhouse gases, but they are, for the most part, solely a product of industrial activities.

These substances can be broadly classified as total residual chlorine, which includes free chlorine (HOC1, OC1-, C12) and the organic and inorganic chloramines (NHxC13-x), chloralkyl and chloralkene substances, chloraryl substances, and other halogenated substances.
