The Crested Guineafowl (Guttera pucherani) is a member of the Numididae, the guineafowl bird family.

It resembles some subspecies of the Crested Guineafowl, but has a straighter (not curled) and higher crest, and a relatively long wattle on either side of the bill.

Endemics to the area include a subspecies of Crested Guineafowl (Guttera edouardi symonsi), and a Dwarf Chameleon (Bradypodion sp.)

The intraspecific taxonomy of the Crested Guineafowl has been subject to considerable debate, but most recent authorities accept 5 subspecies (e.g. I. Martinez in HBW, 1994).

The guineafowls are characterised in South Africa by the Crested Guineafowl which is restricted to bushveld, and the Helmeted Guineafowl, which is widespread and common in urban and agricultural areas.

It is sometimes considered a monotypic species, the Kenya Crested Guineafowl, in which case the remaining subspecies, which are found in southern, central and west Africa, retain the common name Crested Guineafowl, but under the scientific name Guttera edouardi.
