By looking at tissues stained to reveal gitter cells, scientists can see post-infection areas that have healed.

Gitter cells are the eventual result of microglial cell's phagocytosis of infectious material.

Once the microglial cell is "full" it stops phagocytic activity and changes into a relatively non-reactive gitter cell.

These include synaptic stripping, secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines, recruitment of neurons and astrocytes to the damaged area, and formation of gitter cells.
