Gastric pit cells are replaced every 2-4 days.

These cells line the gastric mucosa and gastric pits.

In the stomach it is simple columnar, and is organised into gastric pits and glands to deal with secretion.

Gastric pits become progressively deeper and more convoluted from the proximal cardia to the distal pyloric region.

Typically, the proximal but not distal part of the material extruding from the gastric pits was covered by a basement membrane (Fig 1C).

The gastric mucosa is the mucous membrane layer of the stomach which contains the glands and the gastric pits.

Gastric pits are indentations in the stomach which denote entrances to the tubular shaped gastric glands.

Gastric juice is secreted from gastric glands, which are located in narrow tube like structures called gastric pits.

Instrumental in the latter is the process of restitution, by which epithelial continuity is re-established by mucous cells emigrating from the gastric pits.

When the polyps are biopsied, the pathology typically shows shortened gastric pits, and both superficial and deep cystic lesions in the fundic glands.

Although the basal lamina remained visible at many places, the gastric pits of vehicle pretreated rats were uniformly filled with gastric glands (Figs 5E and F).

An important iodine-concentration by sodium-iodide symporter (NIS) is present in mucinous cells of surface epithelium and gastric pits of the fundus and pyloric part of the stomach.

In certain areas of surface denudiation, damaged cells and cell fragments were still visible inside the gastric pits, whereas in other areas no cells were discernible within the pits (Fig 5A).
