Fungiform papillae - as the name suggests, these are slightly mushroom-shaped if looked at in longitudinal section.

Fungiform papillae are located on the anterior two-thirds of the tongue and typically contain 1-2 taste buds each.

Fungiform papillae are found dispersed throughout the filiform papillae.

It is possible that there is another sweet receptor in fungiform taste buds, as has been suggested [ 6 ] .

Many people who can taste propylthiouracil are also 'supertasters'-they have more fungiform papillae, structures containing taste buds, on their tongues than non-tasters (Figure 2).

Fungiform papillae are present on the anterior portion of the tongue while circumvallate papillae and foliate papillae are found on the posterior portion of the tongue.
