The linear slope of first derivative signal of a transition in the (2,1,1) vibration-rotation band of water vapour is used as a frequency discriminator.

Conventional frequency demodulators consist of analog frequency discriminators, followed by analog-to-digital converters (ADC).

This particular FM design uses a modern phase locked loop detector, unlike the frequency discriminator or ratio detector used in earlier FM receivers.

I will present the design of the frequency discriminator as well as the optical and photonic systems, and show how they were used to improve the stability of the lasers by four orders of magnitude.
