Iftar begins with soup, either made from lentils, vegetables or freekeh.

Pilaf or plain freekeh are normally served alongside the dinner meat.

I remember boring her with stories about freekeh (a roasted, smoky green wheat), Roman ruins and gorgeous wine before noticing she wasn't saying much and that her voice was a bit quivery.
