In the 1980s and 1990s, lactation professionals used to make a differentiation between foremilk and hindmilk.

At the beginning of the feeding, the milk is bluish and contains lactose and proteins, but little fat; it is called foremilk.

This allows your baby to get the foremilk, which has water and needed nutrients, and hindmilk, which has more fat and calories to satisfy your baby's appetite.

For example, some mothers worry that their baby won't get a full feed if they're only the breast for a short time, because they've read the baby needs a certain amount of time to get the creamier hindmilk, after the foremilk.
