R/P FLIP is a 355-foot manned research vessel and floating instrument platform.

In the early 1960s, Spiess helped develop R/P FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform), a floating laboratory.

The institution operates a fleet of four oceanographic research vessels and the research platform R/P FLIP (FLoating Instrument Platform) for oceanographic research.

In the early 1960's, Dr. Spiess (pronounced SPEES) and his colleagues at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in the La Jolla section developed the floating instrument platform, a manned research vessel that became known as FLIP.

In 2012, on the occasion of the 50th birthday of RP FLIP ("Floating Instrument Platform"), several GoPro action cameras were placed on various positions aboard the research vessel to capture it as it flipped and descended into the ocean.
