A fistulotomy is the surgical opening of a fistulous tract.

Incision and drainage of the abscess and fistulotomy are required.

Three pouch vaginal fistulas have been resolved by seton fistulotomy.

This is compared with fistulotomy, where the fistulous tract is merely laid open to heal.

Fistulectomy removes secondary fistulous tracts compared to fistulotomy, but fistulotomy has shorter healing times and less chance of damage to the sphincters.

This defect is also described as a groove in the anal canal wall, and may occur after posterior midline fissurectomy or fistulotomy, or with lateral IAS defects.

A seton might be tied loosely as a palliative measure to avoid septic and painful exacerbations, or as temporary measure before surgical excision as in fistulotomy or fistulectomy.

Partial internal sphincterotomy, fistulotomy, anal stretch (Lord's operation), hemorrhoidectomy or transanal advancement flaps may all lead to FI post operatively, with soiling being far more common than than solid FI.
