There is no specific vaccine against or treatment for exanthema subitum, and most children with the disease are not seriously ill.

Exanthema subitum occurs in approximately 30% of children during primary HHV-6 infection.

Both HHV-6B and HHV-7, as well as other viruses, can cause a skin condition in infants known as exanthema subitum, although HHV-7 causes the disease less frequently than HHV-6B.
