Steindachnerina is a genus of toothless characins from South America.

Curimatidae is a family of freshwater fishes, known as the toothless characins of the order Characiformes.

In that respect, there is widespread agreement today that the closest living relatives of the Anostomidae sensu stricto are the Chilodontidae headstanders, the toothless characins (Curimatidae) and the flannel-mouthed characins (Prochilodontidae).

This family is closely related to the Curimatidae, and in the past they were included in Characidae.

Other fish families that were formerly classified as members of the Characidae, but which were moved into separate families of their own during recent taxonomic revisions (post-1994) include Acestrorhynchidae, Anostomidae, Chilodontidae (fishes), Citharinidae, Ctenoluciidae, Curimatidae, Distichodontidae, Gasteropelecidae, Hemiodontidae, Hepsetidae, Parodontidae, and Prochilodontidae.
