The search for new crop protection chemicals is continuing but the rate of success has been failing, making the process more expensive.

Pesticides, also called "crop protection chemicals", are about 10 percent of this category and include herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.

The program promotes use of fertilizers and crop protection chemicals, soil fertility, and environmentally friendly agronomic methods of crop production.

How successful such efforts will prove to be will not only depend on commercial sales potential but also on the costs which will be incurred in laboratory and field testing procedures, similar to those discussed in relation to crop protection chemicals in section 6.4, which are necessary for registration.
