The reedbeds are dominated by common reed with saltmarsh rush, brackish water crowfoot, sea clubrush and common bulrush also common in the various wetland habitats.

The slightly brackish nature of the water is indicated by the presence of plants such as the nationally restricted Brackish Water-crowfoot (Ranunculus baudotii) and Sea Clubrush (Scirpus maritimus).

Common names for this species include sea clubrush, cosmopolitan bulrush, alkali bulrush, saltmarsh bulrush, and bayonet grass.

It often occurs alongside, resembles, and hybridizes with its close relative Bolboschoenus maritimus.

The best remaining saltmarsh is at the eastern, seaward end of the reedbeds and these support locally rare saltmarsh plants including sea club-rush Bolboschoenus maritimus, grey bulrush Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani and common saltmarsh grass Puccinellia maritima.
