History also states that Indians, especially Bengalis, used ropes and twines made of white jute from ancient times for household and other uses.

Along with white jute, tossa jute has also been cultivated in the soil of Bengal where it is known as paat from the start of the 19th century.

Corchorus olitorius is used mainly in the cuisines of southern Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, Corchorus capsularis in Japan and China.

These fibres, and those of jute (Corchorus capsularis) and ramie (Boehmeria nivea, a nettle), are extremely soft and elastic and are especially well suited for the processing to textiles.

Larvae have been recorded feeding on Hedyotis hydyotidea and Hedyotis acutangulata in Hong Kong, Hedyotis uncinella and Hedyotis scandens in India, as well as Spermacoce hispida, Borreria and Corchorus capsularis.
