Modern concrete mix designs can be complex.

Although it is not required by the rules of the competition, some competitive concrete canoes have concrete mix designs that are less dense than water.

Recently concrete mix design for partial cement replacement with High Volume Fly Ash (50% cement replacement) has been developed.

The mechanical properties of hardened concrete increase if less water is used in the concrete mix design, however reducing the water-to-cement ratio may decrease the ease of mixing and application.

The Concrete Canoe Competition is designed to provide civil engineering students with an opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience and leadership skills by working with concrete mix designs and project management.
