The chaparral pea rarely sprouts from seed.

It is sometimes called Montana chaparral pea, but this plant is endemic-found only in California.

There are two subspecies of chaparral pea:

At higher elevations and on sunny south slopes a more drought-resistant chaparral vegetation dominates: manzanita, California scrub oak, chamise, and chaparral pea.

Pickeringia is a monotypic genus containing only the legume Pickeringia montana, which is known by the common name chaparral pea.

The higher, drier ridges and slopes of Big Basin are typically full of chaparral vegetation: Knobcone Pines, chinquapin and buckeye create the canopy, with ceanothus, manzanita, chamise, and chaparral pea growing dense and low.
