Average length of the common chameleon is from 20 to 40 cm with females often being substantially larger than males.

Chameleons generally eat insects, but larger species such as the Common Chameleon may also take other lizards and young birds.

Among its most conspicuous species are the hardim or starred agama, the European glass lizard, the common chameleon, and the black whip snake.

The primary threats to the common chameleon are habitat loss by human intervention and capture for the pet trade (both illegal and legal depending on the country).
