A bulging fontanel or a widened suture is an ominous sign.

• Abnormalities suggesting underlying cause (e.g., stiff neck and bulging fontanel would suggest meningitis)

Bulging fontanelle (infants)

Bulging fontanelles in infants and benign intracranial hypertension in adults have been reported in some individuals receiving full therapeutic dosages.

The neonates become very sick and present sepsis, meningitis, and cerebritis, seizures, apnea, and a bulging fontanelle.

Bulging fontanelle due to brain swelling was described by Jacob and Mannino (1979)11 as a direct reaction to the DPT vaccine.
